History

The history of 111 West 57th Street is a piece of music in two great movements, bringing together the best of New York City’s prewar Golden Age of architectural design, with the best of today’s contemporary creativity in design innovation and engineering.

“There are other tall buildings, but none are crafted this way and certainly there’ll never be one with this dead-on center view —almost a carpet of Manhattan at your feet.”
Bill Sofield, Interior Architect of 111 West 57th Street

Design

111 West 57th Street is composed of the original landmarked Steinway Hall building designed in 1925 by Warren and Wetmore and a new tower addition designed by SHoP Architects on the adjacent site, with interior design by Studio Sofield. The Result: A new landmark on the Manhattan skyline.

“It’s practically calligraphic, it will glint on the skyline, thanks to a genuinely opulent exterior finished in terracotta and bronze.”
Justin Davidson, New York Magazine
