About

Shrek is an American media franchise of DreamWorks Animation, based on William Steig's 1990 picture book Shrek!. The series primarily focuses on Shrek, a grouchy ogre, who begrudgingly accepts a quest to rescue a princess, resulting in him finding friends and going on many subsequent adventures in a fairy tale world.

The franchise includes four animated films: Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010), with a fifth film, Shrek 5, currently in production for a June 2027 release. A short 4-D film, Shrek 4-D, which originally was a theme park ride, was released in 2003. Two television specials, the Christmas television special Shrek the Halls (2007) and the Halloween television special Scared Shrekless (2010), have also been produced. Two spin-off films were made centered around the character Puss in Boots: 2011's Puss in Boots and its sequel, 2022's The Last Wish. Additionally, a stage musical adaptation was created and played on Broadway for more than a year (2008-2010).

In May 2010, The New York Times described the principal Shrek characters as "brilliantly realized" and said "nearly a decade after the first Shrek film they remain as vital and engaging fusions of image, personality, and voice as any characters in the history of animation. The series was a financial success, becoming the 18th highest-grossing film franchise of all time, the second highest-grossing animated franchise, as well one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.

Shrek

Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Determined to save their home, not to mention his, Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona to be Farquaad's bride. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret.

Shrek 2

Newlyweds Shrek and Princess Fiona return from their honeymoon to find they have been invited by Fiona's parents to a royal ball to celebrate their marriage. Though Shrek is mortified about visiting the kingdom as an ogre, and resents Fiona's parents for locking her in the tower, Fiona convinces him to attend, and they travel to the kingdom of Far Far Away with Donkey in tow and the fairy tale creatures house sitting. They meet Fiona's parents, King Harold and Queen Lillian, who are repulsed to see they are ogres.

Shrek the third

Shrek is just starting to settle down in his beloved swamp with his wife Fiona, but their mucky bliss doesn't last for long as word arrives that Fiona’s froggy father is about to croak. The very last thing Shrek wants is to become King, but with no other heir in sight, it looks like the grumpy green one is destined never to live quietly in the swamp again. A glimmer of hope appears in the form of heir Artie.

Shrek forever after

Long-settled into married life and fully domesticated, Shrek begins to long for the days when he felt like a real ogre. Duped into signing a contract with devious Rumpelstiltskin, he finds himself in an alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin rules, and he and Fiona have never met. Shrek must find a way out of the contract to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

Characters

Shrek

voiced by Mike Myers

Shrek is a gigantic, green-skinned, physically intimidating ogre with a Scottish accent. In Shrek Forever After, it is revealed that he is much smaller than the average ogre. Even though much of his past is unknown. He is seen traveling alone, being either screamed at or teased by passers-by. The only time he receives a pleasant greeting is a wave from a young Fiona, who is promptly led away by her parents.

Donkey

voiced by Eddie Murphy

Donkey is a hyperactive, simple-minded chatterbox, whimsical, and sociable to a fault. He enjoys singing, idle chatter and often speaks ebonics, and while rarely ill-intentioned can prove rather oblivious and irritating those around him. Donkey is also often quite gutless and tends to freak out in the face of danger, which often proves trying in emergencies while coupled with his impatience and short attention span.

Fiona

voiced by Cameron Diaz

Fiona was born in the kingdom of Far Far Away as the only child of King Harold and Queen Lillian. As a little girl, a curse was cast on Fiona by a witch which goes as follows; "By night one way, by day another. This shall be the norm, until you find true love's first kiss, and then take love's true form." Fiona's curse causes her to take the form of an ogre between sunset and sunrise, and can only be broken by the kiss of her true love.
